March 22 - World Water Day - Ambiente e Boas Praticas

World Water Day was created by the United Nations General Assembly through A/RES/47/193 Resolution of 21 February 1993, declaring the entire March 22 of each year as World Water Day (DMA), to be observed from 1993, according to the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development contained in Chapter 18 (Water Resources) of Agenda 21.

The total volume of water on Earth is about 1,400 million km3. However, only 2.5% of this volume is freshwater.
Most freshwater is trapped in the poles on the shape of permanent ice or snow or in deep groundwater.
The main source of water for use in human activities is lakes, rivers, soil moisture, and under -deep groundwater.These sources represent less than 1% of existing freshwater and about 0.01% of all water on the planet.
About a third of the planet's population lives in countries that suffer from water shortage. It is estimated that by 2020 water consumption increases 40% and that 17% more water is required to produce enough food to meet the needs of the growing population.

Population growth, industrial development and the expansion of irrigation agriculture are the three (3) factors pointed out as the main causes of increased water consumption worldwide and also the degradation of water quality.

The Republic of Angola has 47 main watersheds and 30 secondary or sub-basin watersheds, however, various regions of our country have lived a situation of water scarcity, the result of the environmental and natural consequences of the regions.

The provinces of Huila, Cunene and Namibe are in this situation, as well as in the cities of Lobito and Benguela that go to water in holes, due to water shortages for part of the year on the Catumbela River.
Rivers like Giraul, Bero or Case, which only have surface water during the rainy season.
