August 9 - International Day of Indigenous Peoples of the World - News and Highlights

August 9 - International Day of Indigenous Peoples of the World
The notion of sustainability, now recognized as fundamental to our development, is an integral part of the vast majority of indigenous cultures.

Today, we are awakening our awareness of the interdependence between human beings and the rest of nature, something already known to the more than 250 million indigenous people living on the planet.

In recent decades, indigenous peoples have suffered the consequences of some of the most destructive aspects of development: the loss of their lands.
They have protested and resisted change and fought for the right to control the space where they live and how they live in harmony with nature.

Indigenous peoples retain humanity's evolutionary experience and the lessons that are critical for our future.
They are therefore indispensable partners for the successful transition to a safer and more sustainable future.
